Over 100 AUAF Students Find Safety in American University of Iraq, Sulaimani, With More to Join

Regarded as infidels by the Taliban, 109 students from the American University of Afghanistan (AUAF) have found an unlikely refuge in the Iraqi Kirdish city of Sulaimaniya. So far, 109 students are studying in Sulaimaniya, a portion of the 300 AUAF students that are ultimately expected to relocate there.

Jane Arraf writes for The New York Times on the evacuation and resettlement of AUAF students to one of AUAF’s partner universities, the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS).  On the university campus, a group of relocated students told their stories to the NYT, speaking publicly for the first time since they were evacuated from Kabul.  Many of the 109 relocated students, “traumatized by the loss of their homeland and haunted by worry over the families they left behind”, emanate the incredible resilience and ethos of the AUAF community, as they continue to pursue their education.
