Friends of AUAF (FAUAF) held its Annual Awards Dinner at the Four Seasons in Washington, D.C. on June 17th. During the dinner, the American University of Afghanistan’s Board of Trustees awarded Honorary Degrees of Doctor of Humane Letters to David M. Rubenstein, Co-Founder and Co-Executive Chairman of the Carlyle Group, General (Ret.) David Petraeus, Chairman of the KKR Global Institute and former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, General (Ret.) John “Mick” Nicholson, former (2016-1018) Commander of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan, and Samuel Nappi, Founder and Chairman of Alliance Energy.

Wania Yad, AUAF class of 2016 and NYU Fulbright Scholar, made remarks to the audience and stated that “AUAF graduates share the same goal: to apply the knowledge that they gained at AUAF in rebuilding their Afghanistan.” H.E. Roya Rahmani, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to the United States also spoke. In addressing the AUAF graduates in the room, Ambassador Rahmani stated “you are the future leaders of Afghanistan and our strongest force against the tyranny of our enemies.” Finally, Marine SSgt (Ret.) and Combat Veteran Liam Dwyer thanked AUAF supporters, noting “The American University of Afghanistan is the next step in solidifying peace and moving Afghanistan into the future. AUAF and its students are what make our sacrifices worth it.”

Following the presentation of the degrees by David Sedney, Chair of the AUAF Board of Trustees, and Dr. Kenneth Holland, President of AUAF, David Rubinstein conducted a live interview of the honorees.

Thank you to AUAF’s supporters, diplomats, veterans, USAID, State Department, and Department of Defense officials, who attended.
