This semester marks 15 years of AUAF history. In March 2005, U.S. First Lady Laura Bush made a historic visit to Afghanistan where she witnessed the signing of the documents that opened the door for the project that would become the American University of Afghanistan. Anita McBride, then Chief of Staff to Mrs. Bush and now Executive-in-Residence at the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies, at American University (Washington, DC), recalled the trip in an article recently published by the George W. Bush Presidential Center. Mrs. Bush saw AUAF as an institution that would “be focused on the promotion of democratic values, freedom of expression, individual rights, and the study of such disciplines as commercial law, political science and business administration, and entrepreneurship.” Ms. McBride notes that “the quality of education at AUAF remains high, meeting and exceeding national standards and executing partnerships with international universities and educating the next generations of leaders we always believed they would.”
